At the age of 15, Steve bought his first set of golf clubs. They were J.C. Higgins golf clubs purchased at Sears for $19.99 (a 3, 5, 7, and 9 iron, driver and bag!).  He did not play well with those clubs and claims not to improved much since then.  Steve and his friends played with golf balls found on the local 9 hole municipal course.

Steve was born and raised in the New Haven, CT area.  Steve's father spent 35 years with the U.S. postal service.  His Mom was a “stay at home Mom” raising him, a brother and two sisters.  After graduating from high school in 1961, he worked the next 5 years and attended Quinnipiac College when he had enough money for a full semester. In January, 1966, Steve answered a local newspaper want ad for a retail sales representative at Mattel Toys.  He accepted the job offer with the intention of staying with Mattel until the beginning of the fall college semester.  However, in that August, he met this beautiful, young lady named Marion. College no longer seemed important!

Steve and Marion were married in June, 1967.  This year marks their 50th wedding anniversary.  They have 2 wonderful sons, Stephen and Peter, both avid golfers (and quite good) and live in the Charlotte, NC  area.  Peter and his wife Misty have two beautiful and intelligent children.

Steve spent 13 years with Mattel. After a few years, he was promoted and relocated to the Washington DC area.  Ten years later, he was relocated to the Chicago area as Mattel’s Director of Field Sales. After that first winter in Chicago, Steve decided that Midwestern winters were not for the Schile family.  He accepted a VP Sales/Marketing position with Tyco Toys (Electric Trains and Roadrace) because Tyco agreed to move the family back East ....which they did after 4 years.  They settled in Ridgefield CT and lived there for 10 years.

When their sons were off on their own, Steve decided to open his own Manufacturer's Representative business and move back to Marion's home town of Madison, CT on Long Island Sound.  The business did very well and after 16 years, Steve sold the business and retired in 2009.

During their time in Maryland (1973) Steve and his parents bought a lot and built a home in a fledgling ITT/Levitt community in Florida called Palm Coast.  This was in the "F" section and the house is still standing.  At that time, Palm Coast had approximately 900 residents.  Steve and Marion bought their home in Grand Haven in 1999 as snowbirds and moved to Grand Haven permanently in 2012.

Over the years, Steve and Marion have traveled extensively to Europe and Asia and played some of the world's greatest golf courses!

They love the Grand Haven community and enjoy the wonderful golfing friends and neighbors they have met here.  We are grateful to have Steve as an active member of our MGA.
